Committee created to recognize Andrew Harris

In response to recent student and faculty activism the UVM administration has come up with a plan to recognize the University’s first African American graduate.

A committee will be formed that will determine how the University will recognize and celebrate Andrew Harris, UVM’s first African American graduate, president Tom Sullivan said in a letter to the UVM community.

Committee members include Aya Al-Namee, SGA president-elect, among other University figures, according to the letter.

“I have asked the Committee to make its recommendations to me by April 21,” Sullivan said.

Harris’ graduation from UVM was “nationally significant” due to the fact that he was the first African American college graduate in America to support abolishing slavery and to demand “full equality for people of color,” he said.

Sullivan said that he “looks forward to sharing with the UVM community, in a few short weeks, the ideas the Committee generates.”
