Cats Beat Bison, Fall to Big Green

Christie Layden and Kristen MacDonald each scored once to lead the University of Vermont field hockey team past visiting Bucknell, 2-1, in a non-conference gameThursday afternoon.

Vermont controlled much of the action in the first half, outshooting the Bison 8-3. Layden converted a Vermont penalty corner at 14:08 of the first half to give UVM a 1-0 lead.

Bucknell took more control of the game in the second half and was able to even the score, 1-1, behind Meiko Boynton’s goal off an assist from Cara Turner at 16:39 of the second half. MacDonald netted the game winner off a penalty corner with 6:16 left in the game.

Holly Colberg made two saves in the Vermont net to pick up the win, while Sonja Wettergreen made seven stops for Bucknell.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Catamounts and moves them up to 5-11.

On Wedensday Dartmouth’s Lauren Welsh scored the game’s only goal just 2:39 into the contest as the Big Green defeated Vermont, 1-0, in a non-league field hockey game at UVM’s Archie Post Field.

Vermont was playing only its second home game of the year. Difficult playing conditions made good scoring chances somewhat rare, as the driving rain made the natural grass field more and more slick as the game wore on.

Vermont returns to action on Friday, October 25th when it hosts Boston University in an important AE Conference game at 2:00pm at Post Field.
