CCTA strike ends, services resume

Following a strike lasting 18 days and a 10-hour negotiation session, the CCTA board of commissioners has ratified their bargaining agreement with the drivers union, April 3.

The CCTA bus strike ended April 3, according to the CCTA media release.  Buses returned to the full weekday schedule April 4.

The CCTA and Union made a collective bargaining agreement, according to a CCTA press release. The negotiation session began April 2 and ended the morning of April 3.

The CCTA ratified this agreement as a new contract April 3. There will be no fare for passengers of CCTA buses until Apr. 13, according to the release.

CCTA said they are “pleased with the resumption” of transit services and want to make up for inconveniences that this strike may have caused by offering the week of free fare and replacement monthly passes for those who purchased ones for March.

“With this negotiation behind us, we look forward to working with our drivers to strengthen our organization and expand access to the essential public transportation services we provide together,” the media release stated.

Bus driver Mike Walker addressed his request to fire all CCTA managers, in a Seven Days article April 3.

“We respectfully ask for their removal,” Walker said. “We will beholding all of you responsible. We don’t want any retaliation. We are there to serve the public,” he said.

According to the article, CCTA commissioners have not yet directly respond to Walker’s request, according to the article.

First-year Michaela Paul is glad that the strike is over and the busses have started running again.

“It’s great because not only did the bus drivers benefit but people can more easily get around,” Paul said.
