The University of Vermont field hockey team has qualified for the America East playoffs for the first time since 1991, and will play top-seeded and nationally ranked Northeastern Friday at 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field at Wentworth Institute in Boston.
The Catamounts, who finished their America East season with a 2-3 record, qualified for the tournament thanks to a huge win over Boston University last week a 2-1 Northeastern win over the Terriers Saturday.
The Catamounts, 6-12 overall, are the fourth seed in the tournament. Second-seed New Hampshire will play third seed Maine in the other America East semifinal, set for 3:30pm Friday. The championship game will be played Sunday at 2pm.
The Catamounts finish up the regular season with a game against Rhode Island at Boston College on Monday at 2pm.
Picked to finish seventh by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll, the University of Vermont (10-5-1; 5-1-1, 16 points) leads the America East standings with one game to play. The Catamounts, already with a playoff berth in their pockets, can clinch their first regular season title since 1989 with a win at Boston University on Sunday (3 p.m.).
