Hessney Carries UVM

Sophomore Nikkie Hessney netted the game-winner and assisted on the insurance goal as Vermont earned a 2-0 victory over Marist (1-8-0) in a non-conference match.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half. In the 84th minute Hessney’s volley off a cross from Sara Jablonski found the back of the net to put UVM up 1-0.

Five minutes later, Hessney sent a pass across the six-yard line to teammate Lauren Donagher. Donagher was able to finish it off for her third goal of the year.

Senior Brooke Fairbanks made five saves in the Vermont net to pick up her second shutout victory in three games. Mellanie Nai made one save for Marist.

On Friday, Senior Sarah Olsen’s header off of Ali Gombar’s corner kick with 1:40 remaining in regulation was the difference as the Cornell Big Red (5-2-0) defeated Vermont, 1-0, in a non-conference contest.

The two teams played through a scoreless first half. The Catamounts had few scoring oppportunities as most of the action took place in the midfield.

Cornell’s Kara Ishikawa fired a shot off the cross bar in the 83rd minute and Olsen was finally able to find the back of the net in the 88th minute.

Fairbanks was outstanding in net making a season saves in the Catamount net. Katie Thomas made three saves in the Cornell net to earn the shutout victory.

The Big Red outshot Vermont 24-7 in the match.

Vermont (8-3-0) continues its four game homestand on Friday, October 11 when the Catamounts host America East newcomer Binghamton at 3:00pm at Centennial Field.
