On Saturday the Vermont Men’s Soccer team took on the Maine Black Bears and came out on top to bring their America East record to 2-0-0 (7-4-0 overall).

Vermont junior Ethan Hutchins started things off well for

Vermont when he scored 11:28 into the game off of a pass from sophomore Ronan Keegan.

The Cats had five shots on goal in the first half while holding Maine to only 2 shots.

Vermont’s first half play had Maine searching for answers. “Our guys came out flat in the first half and Vermont was all over us,” said Maine coach Travers Evans. “We played better, with more energy in the second half.” It took the Black Bears 60 minutes to finally put the equalizer past Vermont’s senior goalkeeper Ryan Corry.

The momentum of the game changed in favor of Maine after that, but Vermont senior Matt Samer turned the game back around when he scored the game-winner 10 minutes later off of another great pass from Keegan.

Keegan was a key player in the game today and gave credit to the rest of the team as well.

“It was a hard game, but everyone played great today, and we kept it close to the end,” said Keegan.

Vermont head coach Roy Patton was also very pleased with how the Cats played today despite all of the other responsibilities of college life. “The boys today were very close to exhausted. They go for classes, they study hard and I was a little worried. But they played great and when the coaches, the bench and the fans got up and got into it, it really got the players going.”

Sophomore goalkeeper David Sullivan came into the game in the 63rd minute and shut out the Black Bears for the rest of the game.
