Fallfest 2013

Sound distortions, hard-hitting bass and whipped cream showers were all part of the spectacle at this past weekend?s annual UPB-sponsored Fallfest.UVM juniors Trey Schibli and Theo Klein, better known as the duo Argonaut and Wasp, took the stage first [their recent music video for ?In the Drown? has been circulating among students for several weeks]. The main lineup consisted of Chali 2na, 3LAU, and headliner GRiZ. Chali 2na took the stage first, and over the course of his set demonstrated his versatility by performing hip-hop, funk and reggae influenced tracks. Born Charles Stewart Jr. in 1971, the 42-year-old rapper/painter/MC grew up in South Central L.A., the birthplace of alternative hip-hop group Jurassic 5, of which he was a founding member. He also helped create the Grammy award-winning group Ozomatli, whose name comes from the Aztec god that represents dance, fire and music. His own stage name is a reference to ?Charlie the Tuna?, the mascot for Starkist Tuna. A fascination with graffiti as a youngster fueled his interest in art, and since then he has used many artistic mediums including spray paint, acrylic, oil, and a number of musical styles, according to his website which dubs him ?a renaissance man.?Despite a successful career in the hip-hop industry, the rapper has more recently experimented with different breeds of music, playing around with jazz, funk, salsa, reggae and Latin fusion. His set Saturday night demonstrated the scope of his talent, containing elements from every genre he has experimented in.Next came 3LAU, pronounced ?Blau,? the German word for ?blue.? An artist who has taken full advantage of the Internet, 3LAU?s music went viral in 2011 when he was a student at Washington University in St. Louis, and has been reaching a larger and larger audience every year,.This has granted him a young, loyal fan base all over the world, according to Beatport.com. With a gritty, aggressive style that left many students in a frenzy and a bass that shook the Patrick Gym, 3LAU had several members of the audience begging for more at the end of his set. 3LAU made sure that he kept the energy and intensity high in the audience, and his stage antics? pouring whipped cream on the front row and crowd surfing? proved him to be a true entertainer as well as an accomplished DJ.?As soon as I thought the concert was calming down, the energy picked up right away; there was never a dull moment,? first-year Ryan Susslin said. After arriving close to midnight, Grant Kwiecinski a.k.a. ?GRiZ,? went on to perform what students have called a headliner-worthy show. 12
