Kat Wright celebrates latest release

?Gotta keep on climbing ?til my dreams ? you can make it if you want to, but you better hustle, babe.?These words, sung on Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band?s EP on the song ?Hustlin,?? speak truths about the path she and her soul troubadours are on ? they definitely have been hustling, and they sure are starting to make it.At the packed, sold-out show celebrating the release of ?Introducing??, on Friday at ArtsRiot on Pine Street, Wright and the band showed off the swagger of a soul band wanting solely to strut their soulful stuff. This has been a long time coming for Wright and Co., as it took many years to stand as confident as they do, garnering much local praise from fans and critics alike. ?[We have] really done a lot of leg work,? Wright said. ?[We?ve] spent a lot of time and energy to find the kind of music that we love, and makes us feel good to play.?As a mainstay at Radio Bean?s weekly Soul Night, the band began in purely cover-based territory, but this helped bring the saturation of classic Soul into the EP. ?Rather than having one artist be a direct influence [on the music], it was a steeping of everything we played over the last three years,? Wright said.During the celebratory show of the new EP this past Friday, Wright and the ISB rocked the room into a dancing fervor. A highlight of the show was a cover of Ann Peebles ?Troubles, Heartaches, and Sadness,? which, performed with a fiery exuberance, felt even stronger and more passionate than the original.Another memorable moment from the band?s lengthy set was the performance of ?Dear God,? a cut from the ?Introducing?? EP. The song made movement feel mandatory, with the drummer stampeding in the pocket, and Wright?s beautifully smoky vocals soaring over bubbling instrumentation. Kat Wright and the ISB, with their new EP and their celebratory show, have ?hustled? themselves as the definitive Vermont Soul band ? and they have definitely earned it.
