Real Estate memorable at Higher Ground

Real Estate, a five-piece indie pop band hailing from New Jersey, has been quietly creating some of the most complex, layered guitar pop around since their debut in 2009.Endlessly pleasing and easily digestible, you?d be hard pressed to find someone who couldn?t get on board with their special brand of pop. After their sophomore album, ?Days,? was released to almost universal acclaim in 2010, anticipation was high for their next effort. This came in the form of the album ?Atlas,? released March 4. A delicate, beautiful album, ?Atlas? is a more traditional sound from Real Estate, which is the best possible outcome.Real Estate came to Higher Ground in Burlington March 21 to share their shimmering nostalgia with the rest of us.Beginning with the ?Atlas? opener ?Had to Hear,? Higher Ground was filled with reverberating guitars that seemingly never ended, dancing on top of one another song after song. The set was a perfect blend of old and new, subtly showcasing just how far this band?s sound has actually evolved while staying completely true to their sound all at once. The Real Estate purist in me was admittedly annoyed when my friends and I were repeatedly asked by drunk concert goers near us if they had played ?Beach Comber,? the first song off of the first album, and one of the band?s biggest hits.Even so, once the band rocketed into a 10-minute long, sprawling rendition of that song to close out the night, we all came together to dance in the haze. It was glorious.Other set highlights included ?Municipality,? ?It?s Real,? ?Easy,? ?All the Same,? ?Primitive? and ?Talking Backwards.?I spent a few moments with the band?s bassist, Alex Bleeker, who attended Bennington College, after the show. He spoke to me about how much Burlington and Higher Ground meant to him and the band and how nice it was to come back to Vermont.I told him how much some songs from ?Days? meant to me, and how I have memories I?ll remember for the rest of my life soundtracked by that album.?I don?t even know what to say to that, man,? he said. A pause, and then: ?Just make music, like we do, you know? Keep the memories going.? There are few bands today still making music like Real Estate, making music for memories not yet known.
