Rush to ‘Rush’

Sex, money, fame and speeds approaching 200 miles per hour.To describe ?Rush? accordingly wouldn?t be inaccurate, but it would certainly be a shallow summary.Ron Howard?s latest film covers one of the fiercest rivalries in sports history, between Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), a meticulous, detail oriented racer, and his opponent, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), a party hard playboy. The two racers battle it out to be world champion in the 1976 Formula One circuit, at war with each other and with themselves on and off the track.Loss of love, self doubt, and fear of death dog them throughout the season, and their fierce drive to win and stubbornness to admit defeat may be the only thing keeping them alive. The constant threat of a fiery death and tantalizing promise of victory make it one of the most dangerous games of chicken in the world.Despite walking into the theater with high expectations, ?Rush?managed to surpass even my highest hopes.Fantastic performances from Bruhl and Hemsworth sucked me in until I lost track of time as remained totally unaware that the movie was more than two hours long.Although I?m sure that Howard found ways to chop and cut the story to make it more screen-ready, it feels fresh and original, lacking the predictable plot structure characteristic of other real-life stories that have been edited to fit the Hollywood mold.It also manages to find an ending that avoids becoming corny or expected but still guarantees that no matter which driver you?re rooting for, you?re bound to walk away satisfied. With snappy dialogue, striking visuals, and special effects that make you feel as if you?re on the racetrack, ?Rush? is one of the best movies of 2013.
