Strangefolk reunites in Burlington

?

Strangefolk will be performing back in their hometown at Higher Ground March 29 and 30. This rock-oriented jam band sold out the venue just days after tickets went on sale, leading them to add the second night, which also sold-out quickly.

Strangefolk started out as the acoustic duo of Jon Trafton and Reid Genauer, both UVM students at the time. Within a year the duo had added bassist Erik Glockler and drummer Luke Smith and had begun developing their sound in bars downtown. They also performed annually at their self-started Garden of Eden Festival and toured regionally.

Since 1991, the band has released five studio albums, two live albums and one live concert DVD.

They have not, however, released new material in more than nine years. Several members have left and joined the band over the years.

In early 2005, Trafton was diagnosed with cancer. While he was undergoing treatment, band members formed the side bands The Windfalls, The Boneheads and The Tells and covered large title bands such as Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes.

Just recently the original band, with founding members Genauer, Glockler, Smith and a cancer-free Trafton, announced a pair of reunion shows – Higher Ground being one of the two venues. This will be the first time this lineup has played together onstage since their farewell Garden of Eden Festival 2000, before Genauer left the band to pursue a graduate degree at Cornell University.

This evening should be an insight into the music of Burlington-past for those who managed to snag tickets to the reunion.
