Student unveils his own “Demon”

Junior Matt Lipke showed his second full-length feature film, ?A Demon in My View,? at Billings Lecture Hall Feb. 8. He filmed, edited, directed, produced and wrote the film himself. The movie is about a girl whose parents died and in her first year of college, she is again haunted by the killer who wants to finish what he started 10 years earlier. The experience of making ?A Demon in My View? was rewarding but came with challenges, Lipke said. After using the crowd-sourcing website IndieGoGo to gain income, he said that he also had to pour in his own funds in order to make the film.Organizing the cast was also a challenge because with 30 cast members?and a main cast of ten people?that were all volunteering, schedule conflicts were inevitable, Lipke said. One actor was almost unable to finish his role after having shot three quarters of it, but ended up finding time and saving Lipke from re-shooting a lot of video. The theatrical premiere of ?A Demon in My View? was shown to a crowd of about 200 in Syracuse in 2013. Tickets sold for $10 each and, after paying the theater for use of space, all other profits went to the American Cancer Society. Lipke has been involved with cancer fundraising organizations for many years, and donated the profits of ?Whiskey Hollow,? another film of his, as well. The junior has been involved in charity since middle school, and in particular has been the captain of his Relay For Life team for five years. The film reflects the work of writer Edgar Allan Poe, represented by the killer?s obsession with Poe, as well as other aspects such as character names. ?As a Poe fan, it was nice to see a modern interpretation of the classic horror seen in Poe?s work,? first-year Alexis Doria said. Lipke was attracted to the incorporation of the writer because he believes Poe?s writing to be the definition of horror and wanted to add that flair to his story. ?Poe is the master of horror,? he said. Lipke has been experimenting with film since childhood, when he would make short films with his cousins and friends. The movie that first inspired him was Jurassic Park, which is still his favorite movie. He is currently president of the UVM Film Club and will participate in UVM Film Fest. A place where students submit shorts that are ranked by professors, in the spring. Lipke took first place last year. Lipke plans to continue making films, including a 30-minute fiction narrative about water shortage that he intends to work on this fall. He also has a production company named Lipke Productions, and you can check him out at lipkeproductions.com. You can watch his short feature films as well as find out information about upcoming work on the site.
