I’ve never really meditated.
Not unless you count the mini meditation I did at the end of a yoga class I took that one time. But I was too busy wiping copious amounts of sweat from, well, everywhere to really meditate.
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of meditation, though. I mean, to empty your mind and focus on the present is really impressive.
I can’t even make my mind stop making “Supernatural” or “Harry Potter” references,let alone empty it.
So I approached the Mindfulness Meditation at LivingWell with both excitement and curiosity.
According to Mark Reck, Wednesday’s facilitator and a psychologist at CAPS, there are three fundamental ideas for mindful meditation: intention, or meditating on purpose, focusing on the present and being non-judgmental.
Then you actually meditate. I am horrible at guessing how much time had elapsed so I can’t tell you how long that lasted.
Long enough for my left foot to fall asleep and feel like it was going to fall off.
Let me just say that I didn’t actually empty my mind. I think I’m going to need to practice more for that. I just sort of breathed for that time.
After, you are given the opportunity to share how you are feeling with the group. I found that reflection is just as important to the meditation as the actual meditation is.
It helped me realize that there were others who had just as much trouble keeping stray thoughts out of their heads as I did.
While the lack of soundproofing meant that I found myself wondering who was winning the pool game going on outside, I found the meditation helpful.
Even just sitting and breathing for a couple of minutes helped me feel relaxed and less stressed.
And trust me, I needed that this week.
