Killer Munchies

Sometimes all you want is really good food with an intriguing array of flavors and subtle aftertastes.

Other times you find yourself craving greasy, cheesy, strange food that will satisfy only the most savory of taste buds.

Ê

After speaking with fellow UVM students, I found many common themes among the foods most craved after the use of recreational herbs.

Ê

These strange foods looked disgusting but delicious at the same time. Most of them involved some form of dairy, any of which will lead to heart failure if consumed on a daily basis.

Ê

The following are some of the most popular killer munchies among students with easy access to the Marche (which is kind enough to stay open until one-thirty a.m. on the weekends).

Ê

If your recreational herb has left you and a friend with a sweet tooth, an ultimate ice cream sandwich might do the trick. This concoction is better than a Biggy-Iggy and can be easily split amongst two people.

Ê

All it takes is a pint of Ben and JerryÕs ice cream of any flavor and a box of glazed donuts. Together these groceries will make two grandiose ice cream sandwiches, each consisting of a half pint of ice cream smashed between two donuts.

Ê

If you are feeling particularly ambitious, another sweet killer munchies, that can easily be shared with equally hungry friends is ODDTM* Cookies, an invention by a UVM student.

Ê

This crowd pleaser is a chocolate chip cookie with a twist. Make any chocolate chip cookie recipe you like, add some HersheyÕs chocolate syrupand put the dough in the fridge. Forget about it until it is hard and chilled.

Ê

Next, take the dough out of the fridge and nuke it until most of the chocolate chips have melted. Stir it up a little and divide it into appropriate cookie sizes on a baking sheet.

Ê

Finally, bake it in the oven for as long as your chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for.

Ê

The result is a cookie with chocolaty swirls and chunks that looks cooler than your average chocolate chip cookie.

While you visualize that, prepare for your taste buds to explode with the next suggestion.

For those of you who are in the mood for a more savory concoction when in a particularly mellow mood, try out this recipe called Hot Dog Casserole, suggested to me by another student.

First, put precooked hotdogs into their buns and then into a casserole dish. Next, cover with a hardy layer of caramelized onions and cheese before being put into the oven for about 20 minutes or however long it takes for the cheese to melt.

DonÕt let the prospect of preparing these dishes stop you from satisfying your munchies.

Still there are many simple classics to choose from, like grilled cheese made on white bread with American cheese, or Kraft mac and cheese.

A box of microwave popcorn can also be made to fulfill any craving by simply adding any spices from paprika and pepper to garlic powder and Parmesan cheese, or just cinnamon.

If grease and cheese are all your heart desires than buy a slice of pizza and some mozzarella sticks, fold the pizza in half, put the mozzarella sticks into the crease, and enjoy an extra cheesy treat.

And, if all else fails, thereÕs always bacon!
