Convocation Canceled

The class of 2015 came in with a roar. The expected remnants of Hurricane Irene caused University officials to cancel all convocation events for incoming first years, according to University Communications. The affected events include the twilight induction ceremony, the convocation ceremony in Patrick Gymnasium and the ice cream social. Students received an email from Gary Derr, vice president for executive operations, informing them about the incoming weather and cancelations. “As forecasts begin to solidify concerning the track of Hurricane Irene, it appears that Sunday mid-day through Monday mid-day Vermont will be significantly impacted by the storm,” Derr’s email stated. Some students were looking forward to the UVM tradition, but were able to enjoy other Week of Welcome events. “I was disappointed that convocation was cancelled because I had heard from upperclassmen that it was a great event, but I’m not really concerned about it anymore,” first-year Pam Derickson said. Author of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” Rebecca Skloot, who was scheduled to speak at convocation, will return to address the University on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Ira Allen Chapel.
