Debate team goes global

The debate team was one of three USA schools that reached the elimination rounds of the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), Lawrence Debate Union Director Alfred Snider said. Sam Natale and Sarah Anders were the team that made it to the tournament’s elite elimination rounds, Snider said. Eight members of the UVM debate team traveled to Botswana to compete in the WUDC from Dec. 27 through Jan. 4, Snider said. “We are very proud of Sam and Sarah, and of all the other debaters who earned valuable team points at the competition,” debate team member Jessica Bullock said. The UVM debate team went further this year than the other four years they have competed in the WUDC tournament, Snider said. “It takes a universitywide effort to achieve something like this,” Snider said. The WUDC format requires four teams of two to compete at a time. The teams have 15 minutes to formulate a response either in favor of or against a proposition, Snider said. More than 320 teams participated in the tournament, including representation from 61 different countries, Snider said. By participating in global tournaments, the debate team hopes to positively represent UVM around the world, Snider said. “We plan on continuing our streak of success this semester, hopefully placing a team in the final rounds at the United State Universities (USU) tournament that will be hosted at UVM in April,” Bullock said.
