To the Editor: To what depths has America fallen under the ill-gained and arrogant presidency of George W. Bush in his mad dash to war against Iraq? President Dwight D. Eisenhower said of war: “This is not a way of life at all…Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from an iron cross.” At this moment we have thousands of troops waiting on Saddam Hussein’s doorstep. They are vulnerable as are thousands of innocent Iraqis to all the hideous death- dealing weapons of modern warfare. According to a C.N.N.com 2/6/03 report and Barbara Starr of CNN-TV, the reason for a Bush Pentagon “high-level policy review is the prospect of mass casualties, especially from smallpox or anthrax, that would require the quick disposal of bodies to protect the living.” Under consideration is the use of cremation on the battlefield–turning the field into a giant crematorium. Is it going to take this kind of gruesome demonstration to make the governments of the world understand, at long last, the totally barbaric nature of modern warfare?Winnie Pineo UVM consultant, mentor
