New dorm authorized

UVM has received initial authorization to build a new dorm between Redstone campus and the athletic complex.  The new building will house 400 beds for juniors, seniors, and graduates and should be finished by fall of 2012, according to a Burlington Free Press article. The Free Press also stated that Burlington real estate firm Redstone Commercial Group, owned by two UVM alumni, will privately own, finance and rent the building, which will assist in UVM’s attempts to reduce debt. The University chose the firm out of 12 other candidates because of its attention paid to environmental issues, the article stated. The project will cost at least $20 million and may receive environmental LEED certification of silver or gold.
