New position to aid diversity efforts

Dr. Wanda Heading-Grant has been appointed UVM’s first chief diversity officer. The position will replace the recently vacated position of executive director of the Diversity and Equity Unit, formerly held by Kathryn Friedman. Heading-Grant will have many of the same responsibilities as her previous position as associate provost for Multicultural Affairs and Academic Initiatives such as supervising the Center for Cultural Pluralism and the Abenaki Outreach Program. However, this new position will increase coordination between a greater collection of diversity initiative and organizations, according to a news release from President Fogel. The release also said that Heading-Grant will work closely with the president on matters of diversity and be a part of his Senior Leadership Team. To recognize the hard work of Kathryn Friedman, a reception will be held at 5 p.m. on Sept. 14 in the Fleming Museum.
