On-campus students now welcome at downtown library

On-campus students can now freely access Burlington’s largest public library.   The Fletcher Free Library, located on College Street, is now offering free library cards to on-campus students who present a valid UVM ID, according to a press release.   The policy change occurred when Library directors decided to recognize the University’s payment in lieu of taxes to the city of Burlington, Robert Resnik, co-director and reference librarian, said.   “It became clear that [the payment] is the equivalent to taxpayers’ support, so it makes sense that on-campus students should have the same services available as taxpayers,” Resnik said.   Library access was previously restricted to off-campus students and taxpaying residents in the Burlington area.   Resnik said he believes that students will find many ways to benefit from access to the library.   “We will allow students to borrow materials from our library,” he said. “We have thousands of DVDs, including popular titles, books on CD and even gardening tools.”
