UVM?s alternative newspaper the Water Tower may not be printing anytime in the near future, Cait O?Hara, co-editor-in-chief of the Water Tower said. The newspaper advertises itself as being read and loved by more than 2,500 UVM students and Burlington residents every week, according to the Water Tower?s website.?I?m definitely disappointed that the paper is no longer in print because it was a very relatable news source. The humorous articles will be missed for now, and I?m hoping that the issue will be resolved,? first-year Olivia Pe?a said. The UVM art department is no longer allowing the Water Tower to use their labs in Williams, where the editors layout the paper, O?Hara said. The Department is now saying the lab is for art students only, O?Hara said. ?There are more photo classes this semester, and more students.?According to O?Hara, there are around 14 computers in the lab. She said that she has never seen more than three art students using these computers on a Sunday morning, when The Water Tower lays out their paper. The Water Tower has attempted to get in contact with the art department to work on a compromise, O?Hara said. O?Hara added that the Water Tower staff has explored several other locations where they could layout the paper, including Waterman, and the library media lab. ?We don?t know exactly what we need to do?.at this point we?re in limbo,? O?Hara said. ?I genuinely feel bad for the people that run it. It really sucks. It?s sad for the students that run it and read it, since it?s been such a staple at UVM since I?ve been here,? junior Christian Dowd said. ?I don?t understand what?s changed. We?ve peacefully coexisted with the Art department for years. We have respected their digital lab in Williams and do not take up supposed space that the art students need; no one comes in on Sunday mornings. While this is currently a frustration, I have total confidence that the Water Tower will return in full force in the near future,? Sophomore Dan Nissim, News Editor of The Water Tower said.
