Swimming and Diving Team Wins Last Home Meet

The UVM women’s swimming and diving team won its third meet of the year Saturday, defeating Providence for the first time ever in the final home meet of the season at Forbush Natatorium. The Catamounts, which defeated Providence135-108, are now 3-9 overall as they prepare for the America East Championship Feb. 14-16 in Maine. The UVM men lost to Providence, 113-79. For the victorious Catamount women, Vermont sophomore Allison Buza (Huntingdon, Pa.) won the 100 and 200 freestyle and finished second in the 500 free. Her time in the 200 freestyle, 2:01.52, was a personal best for her. Coach Gerry Cournoyer’s team got the meet off to a good start with a decisive win in the 200 medley relay, with Hilary Taglienti (Westwood, Mass.), Kate McCormick (Winooski, Vt.), Rebecca Witinok-Huber (Iowa City, Iowa) and Jessica Schwartz (Bangor, Maine) finishing in 1:57.44. Another highlight was freshman diver Kristen Elsmore (Andover, Mass.) posting a big win in the three-meter diving competition, while Vermont went 1-2-3 in both the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. -SportsInfo
