Training the heart

Students interested in health and fitness can now learn the same heart-rate training information as elite athletes in a book written by professor Declan Connolly. “Heart Rate Training,” a new book published this past March, was co-written by world-renowned running coach Roy Bensen and professor Connolly, according to the UVM website. “This book is an unparalleled guide to maximizing your training using a heart rate monitor, providing both the how and why for each element, and putting it all together in an accessible easy-to-apply package,” said Jonathan Beverly, editor-in-chief of Running Times magazine. Connolly drew from 20+ years working with professional hockey, soccer and football players as well as Olympic athletes for his new book, the website said. “Dr. Connolly has had a major impact on the resurgence of our hockey program, both from a strength and conditioning perspective as well as educating our student-athletes on sports nutrition,” said Kevin Sneddon, head coach of the UVM men’s hockey team. Connolly has also had columns published in Runner’s World, Prevention Magazine, Health magazine and SELF.
