Vermont legalizes same-sex marriage

Same-sex marriage is now legal in Vermont after the House voted for an override of Governor Jim Douglas’ veto in April.Nine years ago, Vermont became the first state in the country to adopt civil unions, and now is the first state to legalize same-sex marriage through the legislature instead of the courts. With a Senate vote of 23-5 and a House vote of 100-49, the Vermont Legislature had the two-thirds of each chamber needed to override the veto from Douglas less than a day ago.Chittenden 3-4 district representatives David Zuckerman and Kesha Ram both voted ‘yes’ for the veto override, which was met with both cheering and opposition in the chamber when the results were announced in the Vermont Statehouse.
