Vermont’s Vanessa Cox (Newton, Mass.) tied a school record with eight points, scoring seven goals as the Catamount women’s lacrosse team defeated Siena, 16-6, Thursday at Middlebury’s Kohn Field. Cox, among the America East leaders in goals, scored three times in the first half as Vermont, 2-3 overall, ran out to a 6-4 lead. The Catamounts then poured it on in the second half, with Cox scoring twice in the first six minutes and then adding two more later in the half to finish with seven goals, one off the school record of eight held by UVM Hall-of-Famer Lyn Jordan ’85. Cox also assisted on Sara Talbot’s first-half goal to give her eight points, tying the school mark. Former standout Courtney LaMere is one of six players who have recorded eight or more points in a game. “We hadn’t played in a while (since March 27th) but we’re starting to find our form,” Vermont coach Kissy Rowley said. “I’m very comfortable with the amount of depth we have, and the first-year players have been outstanding. I’m also really pleased with the decision-making and our defense was stingy today as well, starting with Kate McBride in goal.” “It really was a great effort from all of the team today,” she added. “My hope is we can build on this.” Junior co-captain Sarah Booker (Lexington, Mass.) scored three goals for the Cats, while Talbot, a sophomore from Williston, Vt., had two. Other goal-scorers for the Catamounts were Dana Spencer (Cape Porpoise, Maine), Molly Sheehan (Salisbury, Vt.), Katie Sobocinski (Larchmont, N.Y.) and Sara Schultz (Rensselaear, N.Y.). Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Salisbury, Vt.) added an assist. Siena, 2-6 overall, got two goals each from Caitlin Doherty and Gina Purpura. In goal, Vermont’s Kate McBride (Canton, Mass.) recorded six saves, while Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle stopped nine for the Saints. The Catamounts then took on Denver in a non-league game on Sunday. The team got 18 saves from McBride, including one with 20 seconds to go to send the game into overtime, but the Catamounts fell, 19-17, to Denver in a non-league women’s lacrosse game Sunday. Vermont, now 2-5 overall, led 11-8 at the half, only to see that lead disappear under an avalanche of Denver goals. The Pioneers, 6-5 overall, scored nine times in the second half to take the lead at 17-15, but Vermont responded with late goals from Sobocinski and Erin Hall (Montpelier, Vt.) to tie it at 17-17. McBride then made the huge stop to send it into overtime. Denver’s Tanya Fuchs scored one of her four goals in OT, while Patience Baldwin, who went to Vermont Academy, scored one of her team-high six goals in the extra session. Vermont was led by Hall’s four goals, while Booker and Cox each had three. Molly Sheehan (Salisbury, Vt.) and Ali Aucoin (Hingham, Mass.) scored two goals each for the Catamounts, while Sobocinski, Aali Mitchell (Davidsonville, Md.) and Sara Talbot (Williston, Vt.) also found the net.
