The Higher Ground Ballroom stage was the site of a unique concert experience for Phish fans April 6. Mike Gordon, bass guitarist and vocalist of Phish, and his band played a two-set concert in support of his new studio album and solo project “Overstep.” The show featured some of Gordon’s jams, a few Phish songs and a few extra Phish members. The mixed-age crowd seemed to break into frenzy when out of the blue, Page McConnell and Jon Fishman, the keyboardist and drummer of Phish, walked on stage. “The crowd lost it when Page and Fish came onstage. Their musical chemistry was instantly apparent,” sophomore Dave Zabriskie said. Three-fourths of the jam band born here in Burlington 30 years ago came together to play “555.” When they were done, a lone woman in the crowd yelled, “Vermont loves you!” But then it was back to business, and McConnell and Fishman left the stage, not to return. “It got me even more stoked to see Phish this summer,” Zabriskie said. In his trademark t-shirt and scarf look, Gordon played for nearly four hours, though the scarf didn’t last that long. The first set consisted of new songs from “Overstep” such as “Jumping,” and “Spock’s Brain,” a Phish song the full band hasn’t played since 2003. Gordon and his band did more than just play. At one point, they all hopped to the beat. At another, Gordon and his guitarist counterpart Scott Murawski put down their instruments to dance in unison while keyboardist Tom Cleary soloed. The space between songs was filled with Cleary’s sound machine, which revealed his tendency toward flatulence-based humor. Other special effects included guitars that lit up with each note and three colorful projection screens. During the intermission, the crowd buzzed with talk about summer Phish tour plans and hopeful song predictions for the next set. Gordon fused 90’s hits with his own music during the second half of the show. In the middle of “Sound,” a song that features shouted vocalizations and repeated words, the band broke into “Fly,” by Sugar Ray. After that, Gordon played “Yarmouth Road,” the original Phish song that debuted last summer and is now a part of “Overstep.” To further the 90’s vibe, they played Alanis Morissette’s “Hand In My Pocket,” and most of the crowd sang along. Gordon played a two song encore, closing with the “Long Black Line,” the second to last song on the new album.
