Following a tough loss on the road versus the University of St. Thomas, UVM’s men’s hockey team rolled into Saturday’s home game versus Clarkson University Oct. 19 looking for their first win of the season.
With the nearly sold-out home crowd’s energy, the Catamounts quickly scored a goal by senior defenseman Luca Münzenberger just over two and a half minutes into the game.
The rest of the first period saw the Catamounts keep control, with graduate goaltender Keenan Rancier making an incredible diving save with five minutes left in the first period as Clarkson swarmed the net.
Clarkson evened the match with a goal three and a half minutes into the period, and then a string of penalties began.
Eight minutes into the second period, a double penalty was called on the Catamounts after a scuffle broke out between multiple members of each team near Clarkson’s net.
With the Catamounts playing three-on-five, Clarkson capitalized with eleven minutes left in the period, scoring their second goal and taking the lead.
The rest of the period remained chippy. Players slammed each other into the boards and a Clarkson player had his helmet thrown off by a UVM player. The fans grew restless as multiple reviews stopped the game for over ten minutes.
Entering the third period, things calmed down. There were no more stoppages and only one penalty during the entire period. The Catamounts showed great aggression, keeping Clarkson on edge.
Going into the last period, the Catamounts had taken six fewer shots than the Golden Knights but raised that number with coordinated attacks. Unfortunately, they were unable to break through.
Clarkson ended up winning the game three to one.
