Saturday afternoon saw a high-scoring matchup for the men’s lacrosse team against the UMBC Golden Retrievers.
Their final regular season match of the year started slowly, with UVM allowing two goals to UMBC in the first four minutes of the match.
Five minutes after UMBC scored their last goal, UVM responded with a six-goal run to go ahead 6-2, highlighted by junior attacker Charlie Pope recording a hat trick in the stretch.
Vermont scored two more goals before the end of the half to put it at 8-5, Catamounts. Both teams scored four goals in the third period, leaving the fourth as the decisive quarter. UMBC’s attacker Brian Tregoning scored his fourth goal of the day to open the fourth quarter, setting the score at 12-10.
But first-year attacker Max Frattaroli prevented the lead from ever getting out of hand, scoring his second and third goals of the game in the fourth to maintain the Catamount lead.
Despite UMBC’s final quarter push, the Catamounts hung on to defeat the Golden Retrievers 15-13 to win their final game of the regular season.
May 2 brings the first round of the America East Championship tournament, where the Catamounts will play none other than the UMBC Golden Retrievers.
