The Oscars: a film lover’s plea

I am almost done with the Oscars and if you like film, and are interested in preserving one of historys greatest artistic mediums, I think you should be too. Let me give you a few reasons why.1. The Oscars are too long. Watching a film is a commitment. You make an agreement with yourself before sitting down that you are willing to dedicate a small slice of your life, usually 90, 100, 120, or 160 minutes at a time.A ceremony that aims to recognize and celebrate these stories and statements should be as brief as humanly possible. Let us know what films and filmmakers truly stand tall, and then let us go seek them out.2. The Oscars are not funny. The Oscar hosts of years gone by have never been good fits. Theyve ranged from the brutally inoffensive Billy Crystal, to the mildly topical Jon Stewart, to the downright confusing David Letterman. This years ceremony hit a new low in the form of Seth Macfarlane.Watching Macfarlane twist and shout his way through horribly planned comedic material was hard to watch. Some moments simply unfunny, others downright misogynistic. The Oscars should be guided by the pioneers of film, not the drunk sexist uncle who cant stop quoting Family Guy.3. The Oscars simply dont get it. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is too old, too misguided and simply too out of touch to be making any grand statements about what is and is not quality film. This is the same organization that never awarded Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock a single award for Best Director. This is the same group that gave Best Picture to films like Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, Dances with Wolves, The Kings Speech and How Green Was My Valley instead of giving it to Saving Private Ryan, Fargo, Goodfellas, The Social Network, or Citizen Kane respectively.Of course there are moments of clarity. 2007, arguably the best year in film of the last decade, could not even be ruined by the Oscars. No Country for Old Men was rightfully awarded Best Picture. But we live in a world where Silver Linings Playbook is heralded for an accurate portrayal of mental illness. The Academy Awards doing something right is not common. The Oscars are a joke. They do not care about good films, and you should not care about them. Keep watching good films, stop watching the Oscars.
