Marlene Tromp, president of Boise State University, has been named as the sole finalist for UVM’s next president, according to a March 17 University press release.
The announcement is a result of a monthslong search that began in October 2024, after former UVM President Suresh Garimella accepted a presidential position at the University of Arizona in August.
“We are delighted to announce that the University of Vermont Board of Trustees has approved Dr. Marlene Tromp as sole finalist for the position of university president,” the press release from board members Cynthia Barnhart and Ron Lumbra stated.
Tromp will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday for interviews, the press release stated. The University is also holding an open forum on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Silver Maple Ballroom, where the campus community is invited to engage with Tromp.
Tromp’s curriculum vitae touts her “record-breaking achievements” as Boise State president, a post she has held since 2019. During her six-year tenure, BSU saw a 71% increase in research awards, a 39% increase in graduation rate and a 51% increase in philanthropy to the University.
The press release stated that the Presidential Search Advisory Committee received over 100 “expressions of interest,” ultimately selecting just 10 candidates for interviews, which were held in February.
The Cynic has reached out to Tromp and search committee chairs Cynthia Barnhart and Ron Lumbra for comment. More information will be added when it becomes available.
