UVM Police issued a media release on Oct. 20 regarding David Sahande, 24, urging students to call their services or use the CatSafe App if they see him on UVM property.
The Oct. 20 media release said Sahande, who is from Plattsburgh, N.Y., has been involved in seven incidents with UVM Police over the last two weeks. The organization issued Sahande a No-Trespass Notice on Oct. 10 and has cited him into court four times.
UVM Police Chief Tim Bilodeau said one of these incidents was the theft of a Davis Center laptop on Oct. 10, which he said qualifies as grand larceny.
Grand larceny is the theft of another person’s property that exceeds $900 in value, according to 13 V.S.A. § 2501.
The other incidents include the theft of a phone, violation of a trespass notice and two instances of lewd and lascivious conduct, which is a felony, Bilodeau said.
Bilodeau said the lewd and lascivious conduct incident at the University Health Center prompted him to notify the campus community.
“That certainly hit an area where it was important for me to let the community be aware of this specific person because of the amount of impact he’s had,” he said.
Bilodeau said that student awareness is vital, as the calls that came in reporting Sahande were from UVM students, staff and members of the community.
“We depend on that, to have that kind of communication from people that an incident has happened or they’ve seen a person commit a criminal act,” he said.
UVM Police’s next steps regarding Sahande are monitoring additional activity and engaging in outreach with the State’s Attorney’s Office, Bilodeau said.
UVM Police have not seen or had recent contact with Sahande, and are unsure if he is still in the area, Bilodeau said.
