?Kathleen Cook, associate director of Residential Life, died early this morning after her house on 448 S. Prospect St. caught fire, an email from President Tom Sullivan said. ?She was a dedicated student affairs staff member for 16 years at the University,? Sullivan stated. ?A devoted educator, mentor, colleague and friend, Kathy touched the lives of many students, staff and faculty.? Cook is a University of Vermont alum from Denver, CO who is also listed on the LGBTQA department?s website as a coordinator for first year experience.Students on Redstone campus were able to see there was smoke coming from a site nearby.”We were in Wright and from the window at the back staircase you could see smoke,” said sophomore Laura Sercel. “You could see it in the back parking lot of Wright and in the street.”No foul play or accidental causes were involved, Sullivan stated in the email.State and local fire investigators ?have assured us that there is no ongoing threat to our community,? Sullivan stated.More investigation into the cause of death is underway, according to UVM Police Chief Tuomey.”The information that we have at this time is that this is just a tragic circumstance and no one else is in danger,” Tuomey said in a press conference. Tuomey expressed her appreciation for local and University emergency crews for being able to contain the flame to the single house.Students on campus expressed their concern for the cause of the fire and the proximity to residential campus.”I hope the way it started wasn’t something that was done purposefully or could have been prevented,” sophomore Haley Mucci said.Sophomore Joe Laughlin lives in Wright Hall and was curious about how the fire was started.”This sucks,” Laughlin said. “It could have been me.”
