UVM student dies after snowboarding incident

Senior Brett Cohen of Needham, Mass. died at the University of Vermont Medical Center Feb. 14.
Annie Stevens, the vice provost for student affairs, announced Cohen’s death in a campus-wide e-mail Feb. 15.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Brett’s family,” Stevens stated. “Our sincere thoughts of care and sympathy are also extended to Brett’s friends and to faculty and staff who were close to him.”
Cohen was snowboarding with a friend at Stowe Resort when he went missing at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 13. after being separated from his friend and the trail, according to a Feb. 14 MassLive article.
Cohen was found about 60 feet off of the ski trail around 11:30 p.m. and was transported to the UVM Medical Center, the article stated.
He was a nutrition and food science major and was involved in Hillel and the Ski and Snowboard Club.
A CAPS counselor will be at Hillel Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m., according to a Feb. 14 email from Matt Vogel, executive director of the Hillel center.
UVM encourages students to reach out to CAPS for additional services at 802-656-3340, Stevens stated.
Correction: an earlier version of this story reported that the Hillel center would be holding a service in honor of Cohen. There will be prayers in honor of Cohen’s memory at the center’s weekly Shabbat service Feb. 17.
