Letter to the editor
October 19, 2017
This is regarding your Oct. 11 story with the headline, “UVM students organize racial justice forum,” which included a claim that the university’s response to student demands was “a breach of our agreement that the administration would not email their response” to the campus community.
University senior leaders did not entertain, discuss, mention or enter into such an agreement. In fact, on the day the student demands were physically delivered, students made it clear that they expected a written response not only to the students who delivered the demands but to the campus community. Additionally, the student demands were distributed broadly, were the subject of news media attention, including interviews with the students, and resulted in inquiries to the administration. The university decided it was important to respond in writing to the demands, first to the students directly and subsequently to the campus community and news media as requested.
