Intramurals alleviate stress

UVM Campus Recreation offers a wide variety of intramural sports that allow students to destress.

“We get so stressed that we find sports as a way of relieving ourselves and having fun,” sophomore Elvis Lizardo said.  “Intramurals are a great way to play a sport that you played in high school, but may not be good enough to play varsity or club here at UVM.”

Campus Rec has activities for all levels, according to the Campus Recreation website.

Intramural activities are offered in men’s, women’s, coed and open divisions. Other leagues are divided by competitive levels, according to the Campus Rec website.

Sophomore Dylan Martland said he looks at intramural sports as a way to keep playing the game he loves.

“Intramurals gave me the opportunity to play some pretty competitive basketball,” Martland said.

Campus Rec differs from the typical pick-up games and open play you would find at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

“Some of the kids that show up are  high school stars, so anyone looking for something more organized than open gym should definitely consider signing up,” Martland said.

The goal of the intramural sports program is to provide opportunities for the UVM campus community to have fun in a sport-based setting with a focus on positive social interaction, according to the Campus Rec website.

The intramural sports program is run by students, for students.

Lizardo, an intramural sports manager, participates inthe program as well.

Lizardo said he participates in intramural sports like broomball, dodgeball and volleyball while still being able to work as a manager for the program.

“As a manager, I have a little bit more responsibility than a supervisor,”  Lizardo said. “I run trainings for officials. I feel like I am sort of a mentor to some other staff members. I get a lot of texts and phone calls from staff and it makes me feel like my job really matters here.”

Senior Anthony Blasi said he takes full advantage of what Campus Rec has to offer.

Blasi has played dodgeball, ice hockey, floor hockey and broomball.

“I play intramural sports because it allows me to play sports I am not able to play any other way, and it’s a great way to meet and stay active with your friends,”  he said.
