Last Tuesday, Oct. 31, saw the University of Vermont’s men’s soccer team lose 2-0 to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats at Tucker Field in Durham, New Hampshire.
Vermont, who entered Tuesday’s action ranked No. 16 in the nation, failed to capitalize offensively despite outshooting UNH 12-9. UVM found itself playing from behind early on as New Hampshire grad student forward Georgios Koliniatis found a goal in the ninth minute. Koliniatis delivered a powerful kick from just inside the 18-yard box to give the Wildcats the 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Vermont nearly tied the affair: first-year forward Sydney Wathuta shot the ball from midfield, which looked to be headed for the lower left corner of the net. Grad student goalkeeper Joseba Incera saved the ball, notching one of his three saves of the day for UNH.
Vermont came close to evening the score again when senior forward Max Murray attempted to head the ball into the net, but ultimately Incera saved it again.
Vermont entered the second half still trailing by one, but UNH put Vermont’s goalkeeper, redshirt senior Owen Jack, to the test early. UNH registered two shots in the first four minutes of opening play.
Once again, Vermont nearly tied the score when first-year defender Nick Lockermann came within inches of delivering the equalizing goal, but just missed. With the clock ticking away, grad student forward Eli Goldman seized a bouncing ball inside the 18-yard box and put it into the net, giving UNH some breathing room in the 67th minute.
UNH, who ranks No. 7 in the nation in Division I men’s soccer, outplayed the Catamounts and pushed their divisional foe farther down the standings as regular season play ended. Playoff action commenced on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Virtue Field, with the Catamounts taking on the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
