UVM athlete spotlight of the week

Kailey Gardner — Women’s swimming and diving

Events: Freestyle?

Class: Sophomore

Hometown: Ithaca, N.Y.

High school: Ithaca High School

Accomplishments at UVM:

Gardner broke two school records in the final day of the 2011 America East Championship, leading the Cats to a fourth place finish Feb. 20.

Her second place finish in the 1,650 freestyle broke both UVM’s final time record as well as the time record at the 1,000 freestyle mark with times of 16:50.77 and 10:12.07 respectively.

Gardner was named America East Swimmer of the Week twice this season in addition to the Team Coach’s Award her first year season.

As a first year, Gardner finished first in the 1,000 freestyle eight out of nine times, shattering school and first year records along the way.

Previous accomplishments:

Gardner was her Ithaca swim team captain in 2008, helping them win the state championship from 2005 to 2008.

She set a school record in the 500 freestyle and was part of a pool record for the 400 freestyle relay — an accomplishment that earned her All-American status for that event.
