UVM women’s ice hockey wins 6-2 against St. Lawrence on Oct. 13

Heading into a two-day series against St. Lawrence, the women’s hockey team looked to continue their momentum following an electrifying penalty shootout victory over top-10 opponent, Clarkson University.

Game one of the series was in familiar territory for the Cats, with the Saints coming to Burlington in hopes of continuing their undefeated start to the season.

The Catamounts established an offensive attack early when grad student forward Lily Humphrey took matters into her own hands, forcing St. Lawrence into a turnover and finding the back of the net less than four minutes into the game.

The Cats extended their lead less than a minute later with a goal by senior forward Maddy Skelton off a needle-threading assist from fellow senior forward Natálie Mlýnková. With the goal, Vermont went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

The offensive outburst continued into the second period. UVM extended their lead with two goals from sophomore forward Lara Beecher, but the Saints stayed in it until the Cats put another on the board thanks to junior forward Evelyne Blais-Savoie’s first of the season.

The 5-2 lead heading into the third proved to be too much to overcome for St. Lawrence, as their offense went stagnant. Mlýnková scored the Catamounts’ sixth and final goal of the game four minutes into the period.

St. Lawrence did not have to wait long for an opportunity to even the season series as the two teams met on the Saint’s home ice a day later. This time, it was UVM’s offensive that went quiet.

After a scoreless first period, St. Lawrence’s offense led by forward Abby Hustler and  defenseman Katina Duscio scored three goals in the second, which proved to be all they needed to split the series.

After the games, UVM’s record stands at 1-2-1 as they head into the crucial stages of the regular season. The Catamounts have shifted their attention to their conference play opener against No. 12 ranked Merrimack on Oct. 20.
