Arts and Entertainment Investigation: Cupid Uncovered

EROS: As with Aphrodite there are various facets to the character of EROS [e’ros] (CUPID). He came out of Chaos, and he attended Aphrodite after she was born from the sea-foam. He (or a different Eros?) was said to be the son of Aphrodite and Ares. Eros was a young, handsome god of love and desire in general, but by the fifth century B.C. he had become very much the god of male homosexuality. This is the accepted definition of the impish creature known to the world as Cupid, but it gives little in the way of explaining his actual existence. Let’s consider the reality of the creature Cupid. First of all he never ages. Secondly he’s armed and dangerous and loves to muddle in the affairs of almost anyone unlucky enough to be within range of his ‘love’ arrows. He doesn’t wear any clothes and has a devious smile, which indicates an ulterior motive in almost every action he undertakes. He hides behind a loosely defined image of ‘love’, which seems, at best un-American, at worst lecherous. Nice wings Cupid. What are those supposed to be anyway? He is descended from a gene pool, which harbors a large contradiction: violence and love. Even though I support a nationally sponsored Eugenics program, and even Social Darwinism, I would characterize his breeding as irresponsible. And who gives this busy-body the authority to continue in the manner which he has from the beginning of time? I don’t know, but I like to think it’s Pee-Wee Herman. Do you see the paralells between the two? I hope everyone had a good Valentine’s Day. If not, you know who to blame: Pee-Wee
