Faculty and students continue protesting layoffs

Student and faculty representatives gathered on the steps of the Bailey/Howe Library at noon on Mar. 4 to speak out against UVM’s recent budget cuts, which included the laying off of 16 staff members and the removal of 38 staff and faculty positions from FY 2010’s budget.

Nancy Welch, a UVM English professor and one of the most visible faculty members involved in recent protesting, called attention to the rise in number of vice presidents that UVM has seen since 2002 and their increasing salaries totaling to what she says is around $7 million today.

This protest was the latest in a series of demonstrations against President Daniel Mark Fogel and UVM’s administration since the announced cuts of $10.8 million from FY 2010’s budget in late February.
