Gas leaks raise safety concerns

Throughout the past three weeks, 16 Burlington buildings required evacuation due to gas leaks. The first leak, which occurred at the Loomis and North Prospect Street intersection on Sept. 23, was a pretty serious leak, according to the Burlington Police Deptartment. As a safety precaution, 10 buildings surrounding the intersection were evacuated until the gas dissipated. Last Wednesday played host to another gas leak at the corner of Colchester Avenue and Fletcher Place. “Burlington Public Works has doing construction when they ruptured a gas main on Colchester Ave.,” Battalion Chief Bourgeois said. “Burlington Electric is here to assist with power.”??    The leak continued for approximately 40 minutes before Vermont Gas could shut it off, replace the ruptured piping and before the residents of the six evacuated buildings were safe for re-entry.??
