Science reporter James Gorman relates his experiences tramping through the Maine woods with Bernd Heinrich, University of Vermont professor of biology, in a feature article published in the Jan. 7 issue of the New York Times. The article coincides with Heinrich’s latest book, “Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival,” which hits bookstores nationwide today. “Winter World” was inspired by the UVM course in winter ecology that Heinrich teaches every winter near Mount Blue State Park in Maine. This year’s course wrapped up on Jan. 4. “I’m interested in how animals solve problems,” notes Heinrich about “Winter World,” which chronicles how a variety of animals, large and small, survive the challenges of Northeastern winters.
