If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say…

I must admit something: Throughout last year I came to consider most of my peers to be fools and idiots, and this academic year, my sophomore year, has only reinforced that belief. There are only so many times you can hear someone tell you how hard their life has become with a exams, papers, boyfriends/girlfriends, etc., before you completely disregard whatever it is they are talking about. Most of their complaining is baseless. It would not be unfair to assume that they are only taking four classes; their paper is only five pages long, their exam is a take-home, and their damn lucky to have a boyfriend/girlfriend and they obviously don’t realize it. Their idiocy knows no bounds. Let me illustrate this statement with an example:I know a girl, let’s call her Girl X. Girl X doesn’t do much of anything. She isn’t involved in any organizations, sports teams, or anything that doesn’t involve watching Friends on a regular basis. Her happiest days are those when ABC (or NBC?) shows the newest episode of The Bachelor. This is by far the highlight of her week. Once this week’s Bachelor has runs its course to completion, she lays on her bed and begins to complain very loudly about the “stress” in her life. It’s incredible. I am unfortunate enough to live within earshot of her weekly griping and it’s always the same. First work, then boys, then some vague reference to how hungry she has been on that night. Occasionally she drinks and becomes unbearably loud; this often happens on a Monday or Tuesday night. There is no deviation in her routine. This is the basic behavior of an idiot. They identify the problems in their life and then do nothing to change these perceived problems. The only real problem with Girl X is the reality she represents: Girl X is the rule at UVM not the exception. Her lifestyle is one that should be condemned, but far too many of us are too willing to condone her lifestyle. I can’t begin to tell you how Girl X has negatively impacted my own life. She is a constant reminder of what I hate about college. I hate the way everyone is long on talk and short on action. I hate the way Girl X never strives for anything beyond her routine. I hate the way most college students so perfectly fall into a routine that comes to dictate the rest of their lives. I hate the way Girl X believes her problems, really are problems. So instead of emulating Girl X’s lifestye, I would urge all of you reading this to take charge of your own lives and understand exactly what you have. What you have is an unprecedented time in history. We really can do most things you set your mind to and I would go so far as to say that if you are reading this, you need nothing more than an idea and a desire to accomplish any kind of goal you may have in mind. Watching Friends and patterning your life around Girl X’s life will only serve to perpetuate the idiocy in Vermont and the world. You’re welcome.
