Kostiew Finshes First or Second in Four Events; Gringas Wins Two Events to lead Vermont to Second

Junior captain Tee Gingras won the 800 and 1,500 as the Catamounts finished second in a four-team women’s outdoor track and field meet at Holy Cross Saturday. Gingras won the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:40.87, beating the second-place finisher by more than five seconds. In the 800, she nipped Maine’s Kristen Vidlak by less than a second, crossing the finish line in 2:16.17. As a team, Vermont finished second with 177 points. Maine won the meet with 196 points, while Central Connecticut was third (107) and Holy Cross fourth (102). Other highlights for Vermont included: Kristal Kostiew winning the hammer throw (181-6) and discus (145-6) while finishing second in the javelin (134-10) and shot put (42-3-1/2); Michele Palmer winning the 5,000-meters by more than 30 seconds (17:41.33); Sara Lovell winning the shot put (42-8-1/4) and finishing second in the hammer (157-1) and third in the discus (131-0); Anne Morrison, winning the pole vault (10-11-3/4); Cheryl Miller taking second in the discus (135-11); freshman Abby Marsh placing second in the 100 hurdles (15.55) and third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.99); and Alexandra Hill, second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:56.92). A number of Vermont athletes will compete at the Penn Relays next week before the team heads down I-89 to participate in the Dartmouth Relays on Sunday, April 27th. -SportsInfo
