Men’s and Women’s Basketball capture AEast Championships, NCAA tourney bids

May the Cats have this dance?

MENS BASKETBALL

Never losing the lead, the Catamounts solidified their first NCAA tournament bid since 2005 with an 83-70 win against Boston University in the America East championship game Saturday.

Senior Marqus Blakely led all around with 24 points, 18 rebounds and five assists. Senior Nick Viers, senior Maurice Joseph and junior Evan Fjeld also helped paved the way to the America East crown.

A sold-out crowd at Patrick Gym rushed the floor at the buzzer, rallying around the home team that will enter into the NCCA tournament for only the 4th time in school history.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Lady Cats dominated through most of the game Saturday night to beat Hartford 55-50 in Hartford, CT to snag the second America East championship of the day.

Senior Courtnay Pilypaitis led the field with 20 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. The stellar effort of seniors Alissa Sheftic and May Kotsopoulos rounded out the top three.

This is the second America East title and NCAA tournament bid for the Women’s team in two years.
