The University of Rhode Island men’s and women’s swim teams defeated Vermont at Forbush Natatorium this afternoon.
The URI men defeated UVM 157-93, while the Rhode Island women’s team earned a 199-100 victory over the Catamounts.
On the men’s side, Rhode Island’s Matt Benedict set a pool record in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 57.43 in the event. Steve Fennessy and Greg Gullickson had strong performances for the Vermont men.
Fennessy finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:09.20) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:27.51) and 100 backstroke (58.06).
Gullickson won the 100 freestyle (53.88) and swam the first leg of Vermont’s 400 freestyle relay team that placed first (3:45.51).
On the women’s side, Helen Dembinski and Allison Buza performed well. Dembinski won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.61), finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.81), was third in the 200 individual medley (2:23.13) and swam the second leg in Vermont’s second place 200 medley relay team (1:58.54).
Buza finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:02.41), second in the 100 freestyle (56.86), second in the 500 freestyle (5:32.13), and was a member of UVM’s third place 400 freestyle relay team (3:53.29).
Vermont (0-3 men, 0-3 women) travels to Sacred Heart on Sunday for an 11:00am meet.
