Fall facts

The colors of fall’s foliage are present in the leaves all year. They become visible due to the disappearance of green chlorophyll, which breaks down as the temperature drops.

The red and purple colors found in some maple leaves come from anthocyanin pigments created from trapped glucose after photosynthesis stops.

The brown color found in some oak leaves comes from a waste product left in the leaves called tannin.

The orange and yellow colors found in trees like birches, poplars are due to carotenoid pigments.

South of the equator in areas like Australia, New Zealand and South America, the months of September, October and November are the spring season.

The first day of autumn this year was Sept. 22.
