Bewley Response: Devin Morrill Is Wrong

To the Editor,

I would like to respond to Devin Morrill’s letter in the last Cynic which criticized me. First off, Devin is completely wrong. I would like to go through his letter and refute each point:

“First I would like to state how disappointed I am that the Cynic would print such an article in the first place.”However you ever read the Cynic? You’re disappointed in it? What’s there left for them to disappoint?

“This article is journalism at its worst. Despite the fact that this article was printed in the opinion section, it is still presented as fact.”My mistake using facts.

“As such, it should include information regarding both parties involved.”No it shouldn’t, it’s one man’s opinion, to which, as Sophocles said, there is only one side.

“I have enjoyed articles in the Cynic for four years now, and find this article to be both offensive and inferior to the work that is normally produced. “First off, no one has enjoyed an article in the Cynic for years. So stop lying. Already we know we can’t trust this guy.

“This is a student newspaper and as such should be a forum for intelligent and responsible discussion.”Go back to Middlebury.

“The article in dispute is anything but that.” Who uses the phrase “in dispute”? Go back to Cambridge, you British Dandy.

“Just because the author has some incredible chip on his shoulder, it does not give him the right to present misinformation in order to achieve his goals. This is what is called “yellow journalism,” and is in complete violation of every ethical standard set down by modern media journalism.”Your article became “yellow journalism” about 4 minutes after I finished a 6-pack of Schlitz.

“The editor of this article should have undertaken the responsibility of demanding more from Nicholas Bewley.” No one demands more of Nicholas Bewley than Nicholas Bewley.

“I am requesting that the Vermont Cynic retract that article and print an apology to all the parties involved. Failing to do so would be a discredit to the Cynic and the quality that its staff normally produces.Thank you for your time and consideration.”Retract the article? You mean censorship? Last time I checked the map I wasn’t living in China.
