The Student Government Association is now sharing monthly updates on our initiatives and progress to further our transparency and accountability. They will be published at the beginning of every month, detailing the activities of the previous month and our goals for the upcoming month. We thank the Vermont Cynic for supporting this idea.
We ended September with the installation of our 28th president, Dr. Marlene Tromp. This marked a significant day for our University, and our senators were delighted to attend and welcome Dr. Tromp.
We made more headway in our three Senate-wide goals in October. We are excited to share some of the progress made.
Goal #1: Expanding support amid the current political climate
The Connect, Assess, Refer, Engage Team held their first office hours in the SGA Galaxy Space on Oct. 3. They will return on Nov. 7 from noon. to 2 p.m. UPRAWR also visited on Oct. 24 and will be here again on Nov. 14.
Our Student Action and Wellbeing and Public Relations Committees are preparing for this semester’s Week of Kindness, which will take place from Nov. 10 to 14. A schedule of programming can be found at https://uvmbored.com/week-of-kindness/.
The Federal Actions Committee met multiple times this month and is working to map out our initiatives for the semester.
Goal #2: Leading sexual violence prevention efforts
Our Club Affairs Committee held Sexual Violence Clubsigner Training on Oct. 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for Club Signers. We thank our Preventing Interpersonal Violence via Outreach and Training peer educators and other campus partners for their help in making this training a success. For Clubsigners who were unable to attend, makeup training will be going out in the coming weeks.
A couple of our senators attended the first meeting of the Sexual Violence Prevention Council of the semester on Oct. 20. The council is currently accepting nominations until Nov. 15 here.
Goal #3: Enhancing SGA operations and increasing our visibility
We partnered with Athletics to bring back the SGA thundersticks at games. These arrived in October and will be passed out during our upcoming SGA games on Nov. 8 and 14.
We held our second SGA pop-up event in Central Dining Hall on Oct. 23, and we were excited to speak to many students about our current initiatives and listen to their feedback.
We hosted events with two student organizations on campus: the Pickleball Club and the Jewelry Club, in an effort to connect SGA to more student organizations. If you are interested in partnering with us, please reach out to SGA Treasurer Eloise Murphy at [email protected].
Our Academic Affairs Committee hosted a scavenger hunt, “Teach or Treat,” for students to visit resources across campus and receive both academic support and candy. We had numerous participating locations, and we thank all those who got involved.
Looking Ahead
In the upcoming month, we have a handful of campus events to look out for that are open to all students.
On Nov. 8, we will have our Community Clean-Up at 10 a.m. in the Davis Center Oval.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, we will host a TEDx event featuring personal stories on sustainability, the environment and the natural world. This event starts at 7:30 in the Livak Ballroom.
The week after, we have the Clubsigner Budget Workshop in Grand Maple on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. This is required for any club submitting a budget.
