A hand sanitizer station in Millis Hall was intentionally set on fire in the early morning hours Dec. 4, according to an email from Michael Schirling, chief safety and compliance officer.

The activated sprinkler system extinguished the fire and spread water into several rooms, the email stated. Damage caused by the water resulted in several students being displaced. Residential Life staff are offering assistance to those affected.

Physical Plant workers have begun repairing the damage with the help of contractors in an effort to allow affected students to return to their rooms as soon as possible, according to the email.

UVM Police Services is investigating the act of arson and anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact them at (802) 656-3473 or make a report through the LiveSafe app, the email stated.

UVM Police Services is offering a substantial reward to anyone who gives information that leads to the identification of the person or persons involved, Schirling stated.
